Singapore holiday highlights:
- Explore the heart of Singapore’s history and colonial core with a wander along the North bank of the Riverside District, where Raffles – the British statesman, not the fictional ‘gentleman thief’ - originally landed and founded Singapore. The bulk of the city’s historical attractions, museums, statues and theatres are clustered by the river here, so it’s a good place to stroll for a spot of culture-soaking.
- Fulfil every possible retail therapy need on the shopaholics’ utopia of Orchard Road – named after the nutmeg orchards that once lined it – which is now a 4 km stretch of seriously flashy shopping malls. Although your credit card might melt, you won’t need to, as a network of underpasses link many of the malls and give shelter from the sizzling heat.
- Cruise along the Singapore River on one of the many tour boats – it’s the best way to see the heart of the city and its fascinating history. Singapore has always relied on its river and port to bring in everything it needs from outside the island, so travelling along this crucial artery is like feeling the life blood of the city. (With no effort involved !)
- Island hop to one of Singapore’s 63 islands, and the most obvious quick tourist getaway is Sentosa, off the southern coast. This well-served beach holiday resort is away from Singapore’s city fizz, but easily reached by road from the main(is)land, or via the pretty route, on a glass-bottomed cable car. There are even tame peacocks wandering the streets…
Food:
Because of its worldwide economic status, and resulting ex-pat population and visiting business traders, pretty much every cuisine can be found in Singapore. The price range of eateries is as broad as the culinary choice – which means a tasty canyon-wide spread of global goodies.
- Absinthe, 48 Bukit Pasoh Road – Worth seeking out in its quietly tucked away spot in Chinatown, this lively and unpretentious, almost Parisienne style relaxed and cosy restaurant not only serves the legendary liquid ‘green fairy’ after which it is named, but also food with a definite French flair, such as foie gras and lobster bisque.
- Din Tai Fung, 435 Orchard Road – People pile in here, particularly for the steamed pork dumplings. Chopsticks away from a quiet, sit-back-and- relax restaurant, this is a fast food, Chinese tea and chopsticks kind of place, where you can watch the dim sum being made while the queues build outside.
- Cherry Garden, Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Raffles Avenue – Contemporary Chinese fare in a cosy hotel setting, with a phone-book sized menu to choose from. The Sunday dim sum brunch with free-flowing champagne is particularly popular, and the wasabi prawns with aioli have won rave reviews.
- Keyaki, Pan Pacific Hotel, 7 Raffles Boulevard – A little taste of Kyoto in Singapore, this Japanese fine dining restaurant has quality food, attentive staff and a pretty garden with a koi pond. It’s an overall experience rather than just a meal, styled like a Japanese wooden house on the fourth floor of the hotel – so some great skyline views if you’re sitting outside.
Weather In Singapore:
You’ll never get cold in Singapore – in fact you’re pretty much guaranteed consistent heat all year round. The climate in Singapore is classed as tropical rainforest, and as such it has no distinct seasons. There is plentiful rain however, with two monsoons a year in December – March, and June – September, while December and January tend to be cloudy and showery. There are also differences between the two sides of the island: the East tends to be slightly drier and hotter than the
