THE KOH SAMUI VIBE
Although Koh Samui began as a back-packers’ destination back in the 70s, these days it is really upping its game into the luxury market. The laid back atmosphere of its early days still prevails – though less so in the loud and leery fleshpits of night-time Chaweng and Lamai - and Samui generally has a more tranquil tempo than Phuket and Pattaya. Backpackers still head for Samui, usually on their way to its less developed little sister Ko Pha Ngan, 20 km to the North, for the legendary monthly full moon party.
Maenam remains a favourite for back-packers and those on a shoestring, as does Lamai. Bophut has a French influence and feels more sophisticated, and the 6km bay of Chaweng is a fairly pricey playground for all types, but particularly those who like to be close to the action – which is along the traffic-clogged street running parallel to the 2km, dead straight stretch of beach in the middle. Many Thai people retire to Samui, and on the whole the population is known for being even friendlier here than in the rest of smiley Thailand, and with a broad cross section of economic classes.
