Hong Kong City

Hong Kong is a non-stop metropolis with seething pavements and cloud-skimming skyscrapers, full of flashing neon lights, lively voices and slow-moving traffic. With its towering skyline and 24/7 city action, Hong Kong is like the Big Apple of the Orient - another city that never sleeps. So a vacation in the ‘Big Lychee’ is ideal for anyone wanting an up-tempo urban adventure, rather than a dozy, head-hitting-the-pillow by-ten-every-night kind of vacation. The words ‘sleepy’, ‘dull’ and ‘Hong Kong’ will never belong in the same sentence…

It’s said you can buy absolutely anything in this former British colony, and shopping for bargains is one of Hong Kong’s ‘must-dos’, whether it’s in one of the marble-floored malls of the New Territories or the funky Temple Street night market, with its fortune tellers, impromptu opera singers and row after row of eye-popping stalls. Whether it’s for a CD or a silk dress, the price tags here are real people-pleasers – just like our Hong Kong deals, which all include flights and a superb choice of hotels in every category.

Hong Kong

Our holiday packages to Hong Kong are constantly reviewed and updated to ensure the lowest possible price. That means it costs our clients less to enjoy this exhilarating island and its kaleidoscope of unique experiences; like soaring to the 43rd floor of the Bank of China Tower for a breathtaking bird’s eye view over the city. Or taking the Victoria Harbour Star ferry – one of National Geographic magazine’s ‘50 places to visit in a lifetime’ – to the ordered chaos of Kowloon, with its lively street markets, narrow alleyways and remains of the old Walled City. Once the most densely populated placed in the world, Kowloon still bubbles with action, and is a great place to grab a cold one and drink in the full spectacle of Hong Kong’s famous skyline along the Northern coast.

If you’re dreaming of an exotic holiday in Hong Kong, one of our top holiday packages can help put the ‘can’ into your Cantonese adventure…

Hong Kong holiday highlights:

  • Chill-out at sun-drenched Repulse Bay, whose wide, crescent-shaped stretch of sand is one of the most beautiful beaches on Hong Kong. It’s a popular place to take a promenade, or even pop some jumping fresh seafood onto one of the barbecues which are available along the shore. There’s a civilised, cheerful, tourist resort feel here, with smart shops, a magnificent Chinese-style lifeguard clubhouse and lots of romantic alfresco restaurants for dining under the sun – or stars.
  • Jump on the tram - or ‘Ding Ding’ as it’s known locally - to Victoria Peak, the tallest point in Hong Kong and the best spot to get a panoramic view of Victoria Harbour and the entire island – astounding by day, and dazzling by night. The tram is one of the best ways to sightsee, and the ride itself is unique experience.
  • Day-trip to one of the variously-sized Outlaying Islands for a break from city life - maybe sample some super-fresh seafood on Lamma, or enjoy the choice of watersports on the former pirates’ haunt of Cheung Chau. Some of the best beaches in the territory are to be found in Lantau, the largest of the islands and twice the size of Hong Kong, where a boat trip can provide a glimpse of some of the rare Chinese White Dolphins which live there. Lantau is also home to major man-made attractions such as Hong Kong Disneyland, and the spectacular new 5.7km long Ngong Ping cable car, which gives passengers some phenomenal views as its cabins glide over the South China Sea and lush mountainous country park below.

Hong Kong Food:

Hong Kong Yumcha

The territory is home to over 11,000 restaurants, embracing everything from American fast food, to speedier-still wok fried Cantonese noodles, eaten piping hot on a street corner.

Hong Kong is a haven of superb dim sum, and fresh seafood, but dining styles take in every cuisine and level of smartness. Stanley is great for relaxed and laid-back seaside eating; Causeway Bay has the feel of authentic Hong Kong, while Lan Kwai Fong is stylish, hip and global.

  • Po Lin Monastery, Lantau – Veggie nirvana is to be found at the entrance to Lantau’s Big Buddha statue, which is among the largest seated Buddhas in the world. Food is served in half-hourly sittings without fuss or ceremony – and with a low price tag. Even hard-to-please vegetarians should be impressed by the endless ways soya beans are transformed into tasty varieties of mock meat and fish.
  • Man Wah at Mandarin Oriental, 5 Connaught Road – In a hip setting on the top (25th) floor of the hotel, there are good views of the harbour to be enjoyed along with the Michelin-starred, consistently good, traditional Cantonese cuisine. The delicious dim sum, and proficient service, has won it many fans.
  • The Verandah, Repulse Bay – Historic and romantic, this classy restaurant has the feel of a colonial era, British club. The menu is continental, and although not cheap, dishes are accompanied by some priceless day-time views.

Weather in Hong Kong:

The climate in Hong Kong is sub-tropical, so there are four distinct seasons. Temperatures can drop to a chilly 10C in the winter, and the mercury rise to a hot and humid 33C in the summer. For those wanting warm, dry and sunny weather, the best time to visit is October to December, while January – March is cooler and less humid.
